If you think the breaker box you seen was bad I saw a JW and owner of his own company pull all white and green wires to feed three 480 motors! The funny thing is he thought it was legal

Webmaster's reply : Hi Anthony,

I am looking at figure 230-6 in the Understanding the National Electrical Code book, and will base my answer on this type of installation.

The grounding electrode conductor (GEC) is to be installed so that it is securely fastened to the surface on which it is carried and protected where exposed to physical damage [250.64(A)]. I do not know of a specific reference that requires a box connector for a grounding electrode conductor.

In smaller sizes such as 4 AWG and 6 AWG bare solid copper, the panelboard enclosure will commonly have some small knockouts that can be used for the entry of the GEC. In my area of the country, it is common practice to use these small (about 1/4 in.) openings with no connectors. The conductor must be securely strapped to avoid movement of the GEC.

For larger conductors, it is necessary to use a 1/2 in. or larger knockout.
When that is done, it is a common practice to secure the cable to the box using a romex clamp or similar for at least two reasons-
1. the protection and securing of the EGC [250.64(A)]
2. to close the un-used portion of the opening. [312.5(A)]

Please note that I said this is a common practice, and so is reflected in some of our graphics, such as figure 230-6.

The Local inspector or other AHJ may exercise their judgment [90.4] and request that you use a clamp or similar means of securing the larger conductors.

This is a practice that may vary across the country. If you are interested in more opinions, I invite you to visit the Code Forum at and ask your question there.

I will also forward this to Mike Holt, Mike C. our Graphic Illustrator, and Code Expert Ryan Jackson to see if they know of any other NEC requirement on this topic.

Thanks

Best regards,

Mike, just a note to let you know that when I retired nine years ago and moved to Blounty County Tenessee, there were no building inspections being performed in the county. After addressing the issue of safety and protection of the homeowners investment, I convinced the county to adopt the International Building Codes two years ago. Also after raising issues about the way planning and zoning was conducted here in the county, I was appointed to the Zoning Board of Appeals.
Thought you might be interested to hear that one of your past members of your training classes is still taking issue with some of ways that some locations address codes of any type.
