Receptacle, Cord Connectors, and Attachment Plugs

406.8 Receptacles in Damp or Wet Locations

Parts of this section were revised to read:

(A) Damp Locations. A receptacle installed outdoors in a location protected from the weather or in other damp locations must have a weather resistant or raintight while-in-use cover. Figure 406-1

Author’s Comment: A ‘weather resistant cover’ is a cover that is weatherproof when the cover is closed and an attachment plug is not inserted. A ‘raintight while-in-use cover’ is a cover that is weatherproof when the attachment plug is inserted.

An installation suitable for wet locations is also considered suitable for damp locations.

A receptacle that is located outdoors is considered to be in a “location protected from the weather” if it is located under roofed open porches, canopies, marquees, and the like, and it is not subjected to beating rain or water runoff.
