Crossing the Finish Line - Inspirational Story of Derek Redmond

During the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Derek Redmond was favored to medal in the 400-meter dash. The race began and 150 meters into it his hamstring muscle snapped muscle and Derek collapsed on the ground. He has said that the pain was so great that he felt he had been shot. At this point most people would have accepted the stretcher that was being rolled out, but not Derek...he continued on and inspired the crowd of over 65,000 to their feet for a standing ovation. His father joined him on the track brushing past security to help his son finish the race and cross the finish line. He hobbled the remaining 250 meters in a scene that has become one of the most enduring in modern Olympic history. The story is best captured in this video.

What a great message this Father's Day showing us of the importance of a father's love and support and reminding us to never give up! Years later people don't remember who it was that won that race, but many remember Derek's story. When you don't give up you never lose. We hope that you find the inspiration you need to never give up and achieve your goals.

  • How is this a good thing? Sports is about playing by the rules. He is not supposed to get any help from anyone else. As far as I am concerned, accepting help in this manner is cheating and should be treated that way.
