Fire Safety in Aged Electrical Systems

Fire Protection Research Foundation Symposium

October 18, 19, 2006

Chicago, Illinois

Co-Sponsor:  National Electrical Manufacturers Association

Call for Abstracts

Background

As our building infrastructure ages, the condition of the electrical systems is attracting greater attention in the fire safety community.  After smoking, electrical systems are identified as the most frequent cause of home fires.  There is concern regarding the relationship between age (as it variously displays itself in the form of wear and tear, material degradation, improper repair) and fire safety.

The Fire Protection Research Foundation has two active projects designed to explore the effects of aging on electrical systems.  This 1½ day symposium is designed to present preliminary results of these studies and others in progress.

Abstracts Invited

Presentations are invited on the following topics:

            •  Research Projects and Testing in Progress

•  Investigation/Case Studies

            •  Performance Measurement for Design and Codes

            •  Documentation of new Strategies, Technologies, Systems

            •  New Research Opportunities: Where from here?

The deadline for submission of 1-page abstracts is March 31.  All abstracts will be reviewed by the Symposium program committee and authors will be notified regarding their acceptance.  All presenters are asked to prepare a full paper or extended abstract for the Symposium proceedings by September 1.

  • Those guys in Chicago are sure scared of fires ever since that cow knocked over the kerosene lantern. They don't use romex in dwellings at all. Electrical gets blamed for alot of fires. I think the second most frequent cause of fires is grease fires caused by residents who forget that they are cooking.

  • This topic is very important in many small and rural communities. The houses were built 70 to 100 years ago and the electrical was installed without any grounding requirements; creating a prime location for fires as a result of electrical problems
