 DeWALT Recalls Cordless Drills due to Fire Hazard

 

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: DEWALT Cordless Drills

Units: About 346,000

Manufacturer: DEWALT Industrial Tool Company, of Towson, Md.

Hazard: The trigger switch of the cordless drill can overheat, posing a fire hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: DEWALT has received 11 reports of trigger switches overheating. No injuries or property damage have been reported.

The model number is printed on a sticker on the side of the unit. The date code is embossed on the bottom of the unit. Units stamped with an “M” following the date code have been repaired and are not included in this recall. The packaging of repaired drills has a green dot sticker near the UPC label.

Sold at: Wholesale distributors and retailers from about June 2006 through December 2007 for between $180 and $280.

Manufactured in: Mexico

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the drills immediately and contact DEWALT for the location of the nearest service center to receive a free inspection and, if necessary, free repair.

  • The urge to cut costs bites another company & its products. You search for the cheapest labor and cheapest parts to make the cheapest product and you get what you pay for. I'd file this under the high cost of cheap.

    Of course we the consumer demand cheap. A friend's business sells the $17 Chinese made calipers. He got grief from the customers over not selling any American made, so he bought a small quantity of Starrett brand at a few times the cost. They gathered dust on the shelf - none sold. None of the grousers bought the American made, they just wanted to hear themselves talk. And Starrett sells foreign made too. I have a gage block set from them that is made overseas.

    We're all to blame.

  • Once again, thanks for the heads-up Mike.

    I am extremely disappointed with the effects of NAFTA, corporate greed and corporate irresponsibility. I would like to know when we are all going to wake up and hold these companies to a higher standard other then simply replacing the defective product. Maybe someone can confirm that I might be correct with my thoughts.
