Article 702

Optional Standby Systems

702.10 Portable Generator Grounding

A new section was added for grounding portable generators, which reads:

(A) Separately Derived Systems. If the transfer switch for a portable generator's switches the grounded (neutral) conductor (separately derived system) then the portable generator must be grounded in accordance with 250.30. Figure 702-2

Author’s Comment: This means that the grounded (neutral) conductor of the generator must be bonded to the case and a system grounding electrode from the neutral is required for the generator. The grounding electrode for the building can be used for this purpose.
