Have You Ever Wondered Why Power Quality Matters?

We are excited to announce that we are converting our Power Quality book into a FREE PDF for the industry and want to share it with you!

This product provides a primer on the importance of power quality for facility owners, managers, electrical equipment manufacturers and end users of electrical products.

This PDF will help you understand Harmonics which is caused by what the NEC and other industry standards refer to as nonlinear loads. Chapters cover:

  • Introduction to Power Quality
  • Electrical Theory
  • Alternating Current
  • Neutral Conductor
  • Harmonics
  • Voltage Disturbances
  • Voltage Window
  • Electrical Noise
  • Grounding and Bonding
  • And Power Quality Issues

  • The free resource is great. Since it is free, I will only make a suggestion that the IEEE and their 519 Recommended Practice 519 is essentially not described and its updates have taken into account how the amount of load / demand load current is important to consider with the measured harmonics. TDD (Total Demand Distortion) essentially recognizes that high THD at low load is not that big of a deal. Regarding IEEE 519, it is important to recall that the harmonic meter measurements are only considered at the utility meter (point of common coupling) which are not so important for the customer unless your customer is the utility.

  • Mike and staff- I have recently gone back to work after a brief "retirement" from the field. I have always used your books, web site and e-mails to help me out when performng difficult calculations or just interpreting the code.

I am managing a handful of data centers, and have surrounded myself with the best team of operating engineers ever. From the greenest technician to experienced "old souls" such as myself. I am hoping that your book reminds them from where they came and helps them at least once to resolve an issue during their busy day.....

  • I thought the article was excellent. Is there a possibility that I could pay to answer the questions and get continuing education credit for it. It would be money well spent!

  • Does anyone have any comments on Power Quality issues (including harmonics) caused by inverter based distributed generation such as solar PV, battery storage, and EV vehicle-to-home or the loads associated with battery storage charging and EV charging?

Thanks for providing the information and opportunity to discuss it.

  • Does anyone have any comments on products to address power quality in commercial applications such as Transpower Maximum Power Transfer Solution (MPTS): http://transpowerco.com/the-solution/ ?

    Thanks
