On December 8, 1941, my father joined the Navy. He recalled that pretty much every man in town between 18 and 30, and some older and younger, were standing in line at the recruiting office.

Out of my high school class of 900, I think there were a dozen of us who enlisted, and a like number who got into College ROTC or one of the Academies.

The comparatively even fewer serving today are carrying the weight of the rest of us.
