Air-Conditioning and Refrigerating Equipment

440.14 Location

A sentence was added to this section so that it now reads:

Disconnecting means must be located within sight (within 50 ft) from and readily accessible from the air-conditioning or refrigerating equipment. The disconnecting means can be installed on or within the air-conditioning or refrigerating equipment. Figure 440-1

Author’s Comment: See Article 100 for the definition of “in sight”.

The disconnecting means cannot be located on panels that are designed to allow access to the air-conditioning or refrigeration equipment. Figure 440-2

Intent: Problems have been encountered in the field where the disconnecting means was installed on the access panels of A/C and refrigeration equipment. This rule should take care of that problem.
