Why are we not required to bond gas pipes, if for no other reason but lightening? It is possible for a gas pipe to have no connection to ground deal with lightening. When a gas pipe enters a home and goes to a hot water heater, and no where else, such as an gas stove, there is no ground wire attached anywhere. In an lightening event there would be no such thing as "low impedance". Also, with the pipe not being attached to a ground, if, at some future time, it did come in contact with a live circuit, you would have an energized pipe just hanging there to be touched by someone. lightperson February 10 2014, 5:19 pm EST
