What is a problem right now is that a 500 foot reel of #10 THWN wire is around $115 locally. On small jobs when running a 30 amp branch circuit in conduit and having to buy 3 reels ( black, white, and green ) is a very real financial hardship.
Most of the supply houses are willing to cut #8 and #6 THWN but not #10 THWN. For what the big boxes charge for cut to length #10 THWN I could just as easily get #8 from a supply house cut to length particularly if the supply house is closer.
It used to be that licensed electricians could just run black #10 THWN or any other hot color and then tag the neutral and equipment ground with white and green tape respectively. NFPA does not seem to get it that many customers are not made out of money and that I have to ring out and color 2 or 3 hot wires anyways. Ringing aout and tagging neutral and equipment ground is not that much harder!
