Mike Holt Enterprises Understanding the NEC

Keeping up with the requirements of the Code should be the goal of everyone involved in electrical safety. The following is what I feel is an important rule in the 2020 NEC®, complete with graphics and a video. I encourage you to use it as a training resource for your organization, and share it with your colleagues.

Sometimes, it’s nearly impossible to comply with a specific Code rule and after reviewing public inputs, the assigned code making panel recognizes that there is indeed a problem with the rule. This is one of the ways changes to the Code happen. Such is the case when it comes to the location of the required bathroom receptacle [210.52(D)] and its proximity to a bathtub or shower. There is a defined area (or zone) which encompasses the bathtub or shower space in which the installation of a receptacle is prohibited. But what if it’s impossible to comply with this rule? What if the bathroom is just too small to avoid this zone? How do we install the required receptacle and remain compliant?

If this dilemma has you scratching your head wondering if and how the NEC resolved this issue, read the attached PDF, and make time to watch this informative video as myself and a panel of experts discuss this change to the rule that addresses this situation.

  • The code reads 'opposite wall'. The walls shown in the graphic are 'adjacent walls' and are not opposite the tub/shower.
