The purpose of the Code is the practical safeguarding of persons and property from hazards arising from the use of electricity. It isn’t intended as a design specification or an instruction manual for untrained persons. It is, in fact, a standard that contains the minimum requirements for electrical installations.Learning to understand and use the Code is critical to you working safely, whether you’re training to become an electrician, or are already an electrician, electrical contractor, inspector, engineer, designer, or instructor.

The NEC was written for those who understand electrical terms, theory, safety procedures, and electrical trade practices. Learning to use the Code is a lengthy process and can be frustrating if you don’t approach it the right way.
- First of all, you’ll need to understand electrical theory and if you don’t have theory as a background when you get into the NEC, you’re going to be struggling—so take one step back if you need to, and learn electrical theory.
- You must also understand the concepts and terms, and know grammar and punctuation in order to understand the complex structure of the rules and their intended purpose(s).
