Fear can be a positive thing. Overcoming fear is good, but how you do it must make sense. Some people might skydive because they're afraid of heights. To me, that's not overcoming fear because they're probably still going to be afraid of heights once they get on the ground.
Am I afraid of anything? Can I get hurt? There's definitely a risk in doing things that get my adrenaline going. But here's the difference between me and some others who take risks: I always evaluate what is the worst-case scenario, the likelihood of that happening, and the consequence if it should happen.
What are you afraid of? It's important to learn to recognize what's at the root of the fear:
- Excuses. That's no reason, and you should examine your feelings. Use the fear in a positive way. Guess what? If I had a problem that was affecting me, I'd do what I could to work through it. Don't allow excuses.
- Failure. You can never fail, you can only learn something. Some people are naturally fearful, and they have to think things out. Are you afraid? Or just afraid of failing? How do you know if you've failed? You quit. Quitting because you've evaluated something and decided you're not interested is different. But if you really want something, and you stop because you're afraid, then the moment you stop you've failed. The most successful people don't stress about their failures, they see failure as a necessary step in reaching their goals.
- Not fitting in. I never fit in; I was a misfit. If you feel like you're not going to fit in because you're going to be exposed, you won't fit in. Don't ever be concerned about not fitting in, everyone is unique. You should focus on finding your tribe. A tribe is a group of people who think and act the same way as you do, and they have the same goals as you.
- Phobias. Can we live with them or do we need to address or overcome them? If it's affecting your life, you might want to get counseling. If I had a phobia that affected me, I wouldn't just sit there and be a victim, I'd do everything I could to overcome it.
- Saying No. We can't be afraid to say No, not in our personal life and not in business. This is one of the hardest, most necessary words to learn.
- Taking risks. Learn how to evaluate risks and make calculated choices. (We talk more about this later.)
- Unknown. Research, read, and get familiar with how to overcome fear of the unknown.
Fear could be a reaction we have because we don't believe we have the competence or skills needed to deal with what is presented to us, or we're concerned with what other people might say or think. Once you understand what's at the heart of the fears you have, you'll be more able to deal with them and not let them hold you back.
