David Click became involved in solar energy through the Department of Energy’s first Solar Decathlon. When searching for an undergradu-
ate research project, he found a DOE flyer announcing the 2002 competition and was hooked from the start.
He served as project manager for the engineering team behind the University of Virginia’s entry. After receiving his BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering from UVA, he joined Solar Design Associates in
Massachusetts from 2004 to 2007, managing and designing PV projects from 3-600 kW dc.
Since 2007, Dave’s been working at the Florida Solar Energy Center in Cocoa, FL with projects including training prospective PV installers, leading local efforts in DOE market transformation programs, and
educating code officials on proper PV design and installation. He also serves on the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) PV Installers’ Exam Committee. Dave and his wife Barrie live beneath their 5.40 kW hybrid PV/Thermal system in Orlando (in a house). During the system’s first 12 months of operation, their electric bills resulted in a year-end utility credit of $33.39!
