Illustrated Changes to the NEC, 2002 Edition - Part 1

Article 90

90.3 Code Arrangement

Section 90.3 explains the arrangement of the Code and it explains that the Code is divided into the introduction and nine chapters.

Chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the NEC apply to all installations and Chapters 5, 6, and 7 apply to special occupancies, special equipment, or other special conditions. Chapters 5, 6 and 7 can supplement or modify the requirements contained in Chapters 1 through 4.

Chapter 8 covers communications systems such as telephone, antenna wiring, and coaxial cables. These systems are
not subject to the requirements of Chapters 1–7 except where there is a specific reference in Chapter 8 to a rule in Chapters 1 through 7.

Intent: The editorial change clarifies that communication systems (Chapter 8) are not required to comply with the requirements of Chapters 1 through 7 without using the term “independent.” It was felt that the term “independent” was being misinterpreted to imply that communications circuits are never covered by the Code.
