300.15 Boxes, Conduit Bodies, or Fittings – Where Required
This subsection was completely revised to read:
(I) Enclosures. A box or conduit body is not required where a splice is made in a cabinet or cutout box for switches or overcurrent devices as permitted in 312.8, in a motor controller as permitted in 430.10(A), or in a motor control center.Intent: This change, clarifies that splices and taps are permitted in cabinets, cutout boxes, or meter socket enclosures if the splice or tap does not fill the wiring space at any cross-section to more than 75 percent in accordance with 312.8. Figure 300–4
Cabinet and cutout boxes can be used for conductors feeding through where the conductors do not fill the wiring space at any point to more than 40 percent of the cross-sectional area of the space [312.8].
