Article 680

Swimming Pools, Fountains, And Similar Installations

680.12 Maintenance Disconnecting Means

The word “maintenance” was added to the heading and the text was revised to read:

One or more means to disconnect all ungrounded (hot) conductors must be provided for all utilization equipment other than lighting. Each means must be accessible and within sight (within 50 ft) from its equipment. Figure 680-3

Author’s Comment: See Article 100 for the definition of “in sight”.
Intent: This change clarifies that the maintenance disconnecting means does not apply to lighting equipment.

Author’s Comment: All disconnecting means are switches [Article 404] and switches must be located at least 5 ft. horizontally from the inside walls of a pool unless separated from the pool by a solid fence, wall, or other permanent barrier [680.22(C)].
