Article 800

Communication Circuits

800.52 Locations and Other Articles

The text to this subsection was revised to read:

(B) Spread of Fire or Products of Combustion. Installations in hollow spaces, vertical shafts, and ventilation or air-handling ducts must be made so that the possible spread of fire or products of combustion will not be substantially increased. Openings around penetrations through fire resistance-rated walls, partitions, floors, or ceilings must be firestopped using approved methods to maintain the fire resistance rating. The accessible portion of abandoned communications cables must be removed. Figure 800-4
Intent: The rule now requires the accessible portions of “abandoned cables,” as defined in 800.2 to be removed in order to limit the spread of fire or products of combustion within a building.

Author’s Comment: Wiring within a raised floor or above a suspended ceiling is considered accessible, see Article 100.
