License Requirements
Reciprocity
The Board issues licenses through reciprocity to individuals holding a current master electrician's license in the states of either Delaware, Virginia or West Virginia. Currently there is not reciprocity with licensees from other states.
Exam Testing Company
- PSI 1-800-733-9267 Monday through Friday, by appointment, at four test centers in Maryland.
Testing NEC Edition
- As of 2/1/24, both a 2017 NEC or 2020 NEC version of the examination will be offered. As of 5/2/24, only the 2020 NEC version of the examination will be offered
Exam Details
Open Book, consists of 100 points; Theory 20, Wiring and Protection 14, Wiring Methods and materials 13, Equipment for General Use 9, Special Occupancies 8, Special Equipment 4, Special Communications 2, Calculations 30.
Renewal
- 2 years from date of issue on a staggered basis.
Maryland Electrical Continuing Education Required: To be eligible for renewal of a license, as required by Business Occupations and Professions Article, §6-310(c)(3), Annotated Code of Maryland, an applicant shall have completed during the prior license term:
- 10 hours of qualifying continuing education for renewal of a master license; 5 must be obtained in a classroom setting
- 5 hours of qualifying continuing education for renewal of a journeyperson license.
Local licensing laws have changed. Contact your local board for further questions. Maryland Electricians Act This Act requires an individual to hold a State apprentice, journeyperson or master electrician license to offer, provide or assist in providing electrical services.

Maryland Electrical License Renewal: An electrician's license is valid for two years from the date it was issued. Currently, the renewal of an electrician's licensure will expire on a staggered basis.
