1. Proposal - November 5, 1999
Anybody can submit a proposal for the 1999 NEC. Over 4,300 proposals were submitted
to modify the 1996 NEC, of these about 300 were accepted that had any significant impact. Some of
the changes were minor editorial revisions, new Articles, Sections, Exceptions, and Fine Print Notes.
2. Code Panel Reviews Proposals - January 10-20, 2000
All Code proposals are review by Code Panels (there are 20 panels) who voted to accept, reject or modify
the proposal. The voting of the proposals by the Code Panels are reviewed by the NEC Correlating Committee
from May 15th through the 19th, 2000.
3. Report on Proposals (ROP) - July 14, 2000
The voting of the twenty Code Panels on the proposals are published for public review in a document
called the "Report on Proposals", available August, 2000. This document is frequently referred
to as the "ROP". The ROP for the 1999 revisions was in excess of 1000 pages and included
an additional 600 pages+ for a draft copy of the 1999 NEC. Total page count over 1,700 pages!
4. Public Comment - October 27, 2000
Once the ROP is available public comments can be submitted asking the Code Panel members to accept
the proposal, revise the proposal or to complete reject the proposal. The closing date for "Comment"
is October 27, 2000.
5. Comments Reviewed by Code Panel - December 4-16, 2000
The twenty Code Panels meet December 4st through the 16th, 2001 to review, discuss and vote on the
public comments. The voting of the twenty Code Panels on the "Comment" are reviewed by the
NEC Correlating Committee from March 12th through 16th, 2001.
3. Report on Comments (ROC) - April 16, 2001
The voting of the "Comment" are published for public review in a document called the "Report
on Comments", which should be available April, 2001. This document is frequently referred to
as the "ROC". The ROP for the 1999 revisions was in excess of 700 pages and did
not included a draft copy of the 1996 NEC.
6. Electrical Section and Annual Meeting - May 13-17, 2001
Electrical Section Meeting - The Electrical Section meets from May 20th through the 24th to discuss
and review the report of the National Electrical Code Committee prior
to adoption of the Code by the association. At the Electrical Section
Meeting the chairman of each Code Panel and the Chairman of the Correlating
Committee explains the revised changes for the "2002 NEC", reports their final recommendations
and permit last minute revisions by any interested party. Last minute revisions are voted on by the
Electrical Section Members for recommendation for the annual meeting.
7. Annual Meeting - May 17, 2001
The "2002" National Electrical Code will be officially adopted at the annual meeting May
17, 2001. But before the vote to adopt the "2002 NEC", last minute appeals called "floor
actions" are accepted for membership review and than a vote is taken on the appeal.
8. Standards Council Review Appeals and Approves the 2002 NEC - July 22, 2001
The adoption of the "2002 NEC" and appeals are reviewed by the NFPA Standards Council which
meets July 22, 2001.
9. The 2002 National Electrical Code Becomes Available - October 2001
10. NFPA Board Of Directors Review Appeals to the 2002 NEC
Even after the 2002 NEC is printed, appeals are permitted to be taken
to the NFPA Board of Directors.
